I would buy a new Sentra as soon as possible before the economy gets any worse. It would be much easier paying for a new car if the economy was not too horrible yet. I would take very good care of the car and make sure everything stays up to date and is fixed, that way it will last a long time and you would not have to trade. If i was going to trade I would keep the Nissan Sentra at least full five years before i traded it in. I would do this because a Sentra seems to hold its value fairly well, as long as it is kept in excellent condition. The Nissan Sentra usually can get 300,000 miles (they say) so it is a very dependable and reliable car, even if it isn't a brand new one.
